CUBAN ART & CULTURE


The visual and performing arts play a large role in the lives of Cuban people, both those living in the midst of contemporary Cuba and those who live overseas. Cuba’s artistic traditions have deep roots, and even in the midst of difficult economic times, the country has flourishing arts institutions. It has at the same time many groups and individuals who are work apart from, and often at odds with, the institutions and the ideas that reflect the views of Cuba’s political elite.

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation wants to encourage intellectual and artistic engagement between the US and Cuba and artists and art-lovers living and working in these two countries. We believe in the value of art exhibitions, performances, films, university symposia, and cultural exchanges all play useful roles in fostering mutual understanding. Accordingly, this foundation has begun to contribute in a small way to deepening the Cuban-American dialogue about art. These grants in particular may be of special interest:
